Okay, so the title is a -bit- dramatic, but with reason! Phantasy Star Online 2: NEW GENESIS has many weapon mechanics such as enhancement, multi-weapons, limit-breaking, and unlocking potentials.

There’s a lot of info to work with, which is why I have a couple of different blog posts to cover all the info.

Updated to add Gunblade Potential information as notes. Will update the images soon.

HOWEVER!

Weapon potentials are SOMETHING ELSE. First of all, some weapon potentials are OP as heck and amazing to play with, but I’ll let you figure that part out for yourself. What I’m talking about is the elephant in the room that was left unsaid: some weapon series have more than one potential option.

* To keep is as light as I could, I only added the max-level potential definition instead of each level. The numbers change, but the definition remains the same.

Relik Series

While slightly lower level (with a max damage to match), the Relik series is still very interesting due to its four different potentials. The Gunblade will have the Harmonious Unit Potential.

Rokz Series

Apart from being a very confusing series of names, the Rokz Series also sports 3 different potentials you can unlock. Unlike most, the Rokz series does not have a harmonizer at all. The Gunblade will have the Desperation Unit Potential.

Since I mentioned the names being complicated, here’s a list you can copy from:

Rokz Roughewn Sword

Rokz Sixiemes Wire

Rokz Curva Spear

Rokz Sixiemes Daggers

Rokz Curva Saber

Rokz Roughewn Knuckles

Rokz Roughewn Katana

Rokz Curva Blade

Rokz Roughewn Rifle

Rokz Curva Launcher

Rokz Sixiemes Machine Guns

Rokz Curva Bow

Rokz Siziemes Rod

Rokz Curva Talis

Rokz Roughewn Wand

Rokz Sixiemes Boots

Roughewn, Sixiemes and Curva seem to match the three different potentials, too. Roughewn for Revolutionary Unit, Sixiemes for Desperation Unit, and Curva for Staccato Unit.

* Note that the name differences do not matter; they can all be multi-weaponed to each other just fine, as they are the Rokz series.

Rugged Series

I underestimated the Rugged series when I first looked it up, and before I figured out the multi-potential weapons situation.

First off, the Rugged series still holds its own very well when maxed out. It’s actually higher damage at max than the most recent addition to the game, the Trunkul series! The only higher damage weapons are both Neos series, the Gunblaze series, and the Kouklophis series. And even then, the damage is still pretty similar.

Unlike all the previously mentioned recent weapons, the Rugged series also brings 3 potentials to the table, and I have to admit that all 3 potentials have… well… potential!

The Rugged Gunblade will have the Pursuit Unit Potential.

Complementary Potentials

Apart from these multi-potential weapon series, there are also “complementary series” such as Theseus and Trois de, which respectively give the Defensive Formation and the Offensive Formation.

Complementary potentials are probably the most restrictive of all: on top of having only 1 potential in the series, like most series, they’re also incomplete series! In the case of Theseus and Trois de series, Theseus keeps the Hunter weapons, the Soaring Blades, and all Ranged weapons, while Trois de keeps the Fighter weapons, the Katana, and all Technique weapons including Harmonizer.

Talk about a bad idea… Theseus weapons and Trois de weapons cannot be merged into a multi-weapon, even though they’re obviously two halves of a full series with 2 different potentials.

Other Broken Series

While I couldn’t piece together all the broken series into complimentary potentials, it’s good to know which are incomplete:

  • Foursis series,
  • Fivla series,
  • Glissen series,
  • Vialto series,
  • Gothica series,
  • Cattleya series,
  • Quintel series

Finally, a lot of element-based low-level weapon series are also incomplete. It appears that SEGA moved away from broken series when they switched to multi-potential weapons, which was an amazing idea.

Why Is This such a big deal, Valoris?

Fine, I’ll tell ya!

Having multiple potentials in one series mean that you can personalize your weapons that much more. Think about how multi-weapons work: your main weapon basically overtakes your second weapon.

That is true for weapon potentials as well!

I’m currently sporting a really useful Rugged Series TMG + Rod multi-weapon. The TMG potential is the Pursuit Unit, and the Rod’s potential is Gyrating Unit. While the Rod’s potential would be very useful too, I merged a rod into my Machine Guns, which means that using the Rod-version of the weapon still gives me the Pursuit Unit potential. I checked, since the Pursuit potential is very easy to spot visually, and it is unmistakable!

Your Rugged series multi-weapons, or Relik/Rokz if you’re okay with a lower damage output (sometimes damage isn’t everything!) can be modified in a way that you decide which potential you want for your weapon. In fact, if you don’t even care about having a multi-weapon, you can simply use your preferred weapon as a merged weapon, and pick whatever base weapon will fit your needs with the selected potential you want!

While not technically on-topic…

The Codeck weapon series may not be a multi-potential weapon series, but I’d still like to mention it as a powerful weapon potential that may be overlooked due to its’ low max damage output.

Impervious Unit: Potency +26%; Prevents you from being launched or knocked back by enemy attacks and creates a barrier that provides +40% Damage Resistance when at 90% or higher HP.

While it probably wouldn’t be a great fit for whatever current endgame, the knock-back prevention is an amazing perk! Especially if you tend to stay in one place a lot, or if you’re in the middle of the action, where it can be difficult to see enemy attacks (PSE bursts, 100%)

Who’s running to the item lab right now?

Don’t look at me, I’m at the Personal Shop to get myself some new weapons to play with!

Which potential/weapon combo do you think would work really well? I’ve already done Rugged TMG potential + rod main weapon, and I absolutely love it! I’m thinking “Explosive Unit” potential from Relik merged with Talis would be an insane combo for PSE burst mobbing…

Time to take a trip to the Item Lab… again!
